Viva la Vida Villa+Silencio

We started off today saying “hasta pronto” to our new friends and headed right into Villa and Silencio life.

In the Villa, we were picked up by boat on the shores of Playa Hermosa and taken for a short ride before jumping in the water and going snorkeling. We got to see (and even hold!) lots of incredible marine animals, including starfish, blowfish, and octopus. From snorkeling, the boats took us down to Playa Penca, where the water is so clear we could see down to our feet. Our snorkel instructors cut up some pineapple for us, which we enjoyed while swimming around in the water. We finished off the day with a scavenger hunt, which gave us the opportunity to explore the town of Playa Hermosa a bit, practice our Spanish, and learn more about Costa Rica.

When the other half of the group arrived in Silencio, we got to meet some of the town residents and then began preparing the welcome party right away. We spent time creating decorations and delivering invitations to the town residents. During the party, we served ice cream and got to practice Spanish with our hosts— it was so cool to be able to meet about half of the town in just the first night! One of the unique parts about living in a host village is the opportunity to build relationships with our Costa Rican peers. Silencio is tucked in the hills that overlook Lake Arenal, with a great view of Arenal Volcano. On the hills around the village, we can see cows and horses grazing. Tonight, we’ll be sleeping in the town center together, under our mosquito nets and getting used to village life.

Most of all, our group is filled with kindness and inclusivity. It’s truly special to see all of our students making friends with each other, even when we have different backgrounds and interests. Their willingness to venture beyond their social comfort zone is such a meaningful thing to see.
