Villa Day – Tortillas, Games, Art, and Dancing

Today was a mish-mosh of all types of activities at the villa. From the beach, to a tortilla-making lesson, to student-led games, arts and crafts, and a dancing lesson, we did it all. We began the morning with a tortilla-making lesson from Josue, the chef at the Coco Viquez restaurant, where we eat all our meals. We learned how to pat the dough in an even circle. The students loved tasting their tortillas and testing out their Costa Rican cooking skills. We spent the first half of the afternoon playing games, and the students initiated and led a massive game of hide and seek all throughout the villa. Later in the afternoon, we reflected on our time in Costa Rica so far through a writing or drawing/painting/etc. activity. A central aspect of the activity was sitting on our own, apart from other people, and creating our masterpieces for 30 minutes. At the end, we shared or kept our creations to ourselves. It was nice for all of us to get some quiet time, reflecting on our own.

The evening was the highlight of the day. We took a dance lesson, where we learned four types of Latin rhythms: Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, and Cumbia, a typical Costa Rican dance. Every single one of the students got into the lesson and learned the steps, all while joking and laughing the whole way through.
